Stepping Up the Spirit

Movies like “Grease” and “High School Musical” set the precedent for high schoolers. As pre-teens, we see movies like these and aspire to be a part of the “in-crowd” just like Sandy Olsson, or we desire to be the captain of the basketball team like Troy Bolton. Then, we begin to dream of what our high school experience will be like, and we imagine going to games and pep rallies and having all the best school spirit in the world. It’s safe to say some schools in rural areas truly live up to those standards, but at North Star we fall short.

Spirit week came and went at North Star the week after prom in March, but instead of seeing great and clever outfits on all our peers, we saw the opposite; just regular schoolday clothes. “I’m disappointed in the spring’s spirit week. It could have been a lot better, but no one seems to want to dress up anymore,” said North Star’s Student Council president Bailey Parde (11). “North Star’s spirit is a little more enthusiastic during football season, but it’s nonexistent during the spring,” said Morgan Ceradsky (11).

Compared to other schools, North Star’s spirit is easily defeated. “Everyone dresses up during spirit week at Southeast. It’s a mix of every group and they go all out,” said Southeast senior Ryan Kirby. “Our school spirit strongly backs our athletics, as well as the other programs in the school.” Just like Southeast, East has multitudes of students with school spirit. “A lot of people go all out for spirit week. There’s a good amount of school pride here,” said East junior Jon Lyons.

Whether what we need is a winning sports season, or simply more incentive to dress up, our school spirit is lacking. While some schools decorate their halls with encouraging posters, North Star is simply a place we come to school. It’s safe to say we need to step it up starting immediately.
