The Lincoln North Star girls basketball team entered the Heartland Athletic Tournament as the top seed, having an impressive 14-1 record and high expectations. From the opening whistle to the final buzzer of the tournament the Gators proved why they were the number one seed in the Heartland Athletic Conference.

North Star relied heavily on its aggressive 1-3-1 defense throughout the tournament, using constant pressure to disrupt opponents and create scoring opportunities in transition. The Navigators opened tournament play with dominant wins over the Norfolk Panthers (47-36) and Lincoln High Links (42-21). In both games, the Gators took the lead and never looked back, they fashionably controlled the pace throughout the 32 minutes, making it look easy. They showcased a balanced scoring attack and defensive communication.
The Championship game had a familiar opponent, the Silverhawks from Southwest, a rematch from the 2025 HAC Championship. The Silverhawks came out determined, matching the Gators intensity and keeping the game close in all four quarters.
North Star built an early lead behind strong defensive stops and several transition buckets, but Southwest thought otherwise, with a late surge at the beginning of the fourth quarter. One minute left on the clock, the Silverhawks took a four point lead, scaring North Star spectators, and putting the Gators back-to-back hopes in jeopardy.
Out of a timeout, Kendall Anderson (12) delivered in a crucial moment, knocking down a deep three-pointer to cut the deficit to one. The shot energized the Gators and brought back some energy to the fans, as it swung the momentum back into the Gators favor. From there, North Star turned to its defensive identity, applying full court pressure that forced Lincoln Southwest to burn three timeouts.

With about 15 seconds remaining in the game, the Silverhawks were forced into a contested mid-ranged shot that missed. Joyce Johnson (11) secured the rebound and immediately pushed the ball to the top of the key, passing the ball to Omaha Maverick commit Ani Leu (12), who drove to the basket. Leu finished the play with a buzzer beating layup, sealing the victory and sending the North Star crowd into pandemonium.
After the game, Leu reflected on the moment saying “It feels great…it’s great to be a part of this.” talking about the historic Lady Gators team. The Heartland Athletic Tournament championship marks a major achievement for the Lincoln North Star Gators Girls basketball program. With strong leadership, team chemistry, and relentless defense, this Lady Gator Basketball team will be a strong contender come March.
