Junior, Ann Chong was awarded as a Merit Scholarship Finalist. Chong has shown her strong academic success throughout her four years in high school and plans to continue these habits through college. Chong got the idea to apply for the Merit Scholarship from her counselor, Mr. Boile. He told her about the PSAT, which is the test that is required to be considered for this scholarship. After being advised, she decided to sign up and take the chance.
After being recognized for the award at the Spring Honors Convocation, Chong described the feeling as rewarding. “I feel proud to see my hard work pay off after all these years,” Chong remarks. She mentions how some of her biggest supporters were her family and counselor, Mr. Boile, claiming they, “encouraged [her] to take rigorous classes and aim for achievement.” Following high school, Chong plans to attend an out of state college. While she’s unsure of where, she knows she wants to major in Computer and Data Sciences. After she earns her degree, she plans to attend graduate school.
While the future is unset for Chong, it’s guaranteed to be filled with prosperity. Underclassmen who are looking to follow in these footsteps, should consider the advice Chong gave when asked what she would tell younger students just starting on their academic journey. “Managing time well is important because doing regular school work and extracurriculars can be a lot to balance. Learning time management early and being disciplined is crucial to achieve your goals.”
Though the winner won’t be announced until April, just being a finalist is a huge honor. Ann Chong was one of the few chosen for this accolade, making her the perfect embodiment of North Star.
