As spring sports begin it’s hard not to notice the success the North Star baseball team has faced so far. They planned to have their first few games against Omaha Central and Millard North but due to the late March blizzard were postponed. Leaving the Gators season opener game against Omaha Buena Vista and leading to the Gators first season win. With more time to prepare, it was evident that the Gators were ready to take on the season. They ended up beating the Bison 22-1, proving it was a great way to start the season.
The Gators followed up their win against the Bison with another win against the Fremont Tigers. This win didn’t come as easy to the Gators. going into the 7th and final inning, North Star was down 8-1 against the Tigers. As the bottom of the 7th inning began, the Gators started accumulating runs one by one. Finally, senior Austin McKillip called the game by hitting a walk off single to left field, scoring two runs to win the game for the Gators. This win allowed North Star to garner their second win of the season.
Then two days later the Gators faced off against Norfolk Panthers. Last year the Gators competed against the Panthers three times, beating them once and losing twice. Seeking revenge from last year the Gators came ready to play against the Panthers. The game started off tied 1-1 in the third. But the Panthers took the lead in the 6th with a sacrifice fly to right field scoring the runner on third. But the Gators weren’t done yet. In the same inning they scored two runs taking the lead that ended up winning them the game as well. With three wins under their belt the North Star baseball team hopes to continue their momentum throughout the season.
