Soccer Kicks Off

The North Star boys soccer team faces high expectations this year coming off of a slightly disappointing season in 2012. Alex Becker (11) said, “Despite the high level of talent that the team had, we weren’t able to harness that talent into wins.”

The team opened the 2013 season with a 1-0 loss to Lincoln East, which became a positive because of East’s high powered offense.

The Gator defense had many moral victories, with the only goal coming on an East corner kick. The offense decided to start playing soccer after half, but still couldn’t find a way to get the ball into the net. “The goals will come, that isn’t something that worries us,” said Cruz Martinez (12). “What worries us is keeping the other team’s offense in check.” The boys did just that by shutting East down in the offensive zone.

The season really takes off as North Star plays four games in two weeks leading up to the Heartland Athletic Conference tournament hosted by Grand Island Senior High. The boys are hoping for a great season this year with 21 varisty members total, and have taken to dressing up for every game.

The boys have a long couple of months of games ahead, and we’ll know they’ll play their best. Catch the April edition of the Gator Galaxy to hear about how the Gator soccer girls are doing!
