10 Things to Do This Summer

By Kyler Johnson/Gator Galaxy

1. Visit the Omaha Henry Doorly Zoo – TripAdvisor has recently named Omaha’s Zoo the number one zoo in the world. Did you know that it’s home to the world’s largest desert dome?

2. Visit the State Capitol – Nebraska’s State Capitol is one of the most historic buildings in the state; construction was completed in 1932, so it’s been around for quite awhile.

3. Go to the Nebraska State Fair – The State Fair will be held from August 26th through September 5th! There is no better place to see what this entire state has to offer

4. Travel from East to West on I-80 – You can travel across the entire state in a matter of about five to six hours, you can really experience Nebraska going from the flatter grasslands in the east to the sandhills in portions of western Nebraska.

5. Visit Chimney Rock – this is one of the most iconic pieces of our state, it’s been on our license plates and is even featured on our state’s own quarter from the U.S. Mint.

6. Attend the Maha Music Festival – On August 20th artists like Passion Pit and Grimes will take the stage to perform. General admission tickets cost only $55 (it’s an all day event).

7. Have a Bon Fire – Nebraska is home to many great state parks, a lot of them have designated fire pit areas where you and your friends can light a fire, roast some marshmallows, listen to music and chill.

8. Visit the Haymarket Farmer’s Market – On Saturday mornings you can head to downtown Lincoln and visit the Farmer’s Market where you can buy fresh produce, cool art, jewelry, and even some amazing snacks to enjoy!

9. Volunteer Somewhere – There are many non-profit organizations around the state, you’ll definitely be able to find something that you like. You’ll feel great helping out and Seniors… you can get those GOPO hours done!

10.  Take an Amtrak Somewhere –  Lincoln, Omaha, Grand Island, and McCook all have Amtrak stations. Why not go on a train ride somewhere and go to places like Denver or even Chicago.
