We the People

By Amanda Keblar

“We the people of the United States, in order to form a more perfect union, establish justice, insure domestic tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general welfare, do ordain and establish this constitution for the United States of America.”

Do you know what U.S. document this phrase is from? Mr. Bock’s AP Government and Politics class talked about random doing a sampling of the public opinion in their class. For one of their assignments, they had to do a random sampling of their own. They had to go to random adults in their lives or in the building and other social studies classes and ask “Are you a male or female? What document contains the quote ‘We the People’?” The choices to answer were The Bible, The Mayflower Compact, The Declaration of Independence, Articles of Confederation, or The U.S. Constitution.

This random sampling was to see how many of us truly know what document this came from. For those who answered this question correctly, it was the U.S. constitution. The classes were all either all freshman, all sophmores, all juniors, and junior and senior classes. We would think that with the fantastic staff we have here, we would have better percentages of correct answers. Only half of surveyed students knew the correct answer.

Freshman- 58% of 67 students

Sophmores-40% of 47 students

Juniors-54% of 56 students

Seniors- 58% of 38 students

With these scores, the second period APGoPo class was pretty surprised. We figured we might need a little more review over this. Next time, let’s get some better scores and show our teachers how much we really know.
