On Wednesday, Nov. 2, Lincoln Public Schools students in grades 4-12 voiced their opinions on the election, with over 21,000 students participating in the 2016 LPS Student Vote. Students had the opportunity to vote for the President, Nebraska’s representative in the House of Representatives, and the next member of Nebraska’s Board of Education.
North Star students cast approximately 1,557 votes and the only thing different from the overall vote is that LNS voted to keep the death penalty.
This was a “mock vote,” that allowed students to learn the importance of voting and that their opinions matter. Tori Osborne (12) said, “It’s very important that we have a political stance on things, even if this was just a pretend vote, our opinions still matter. I was surprised North Star decided to keep the death penalty.”
According to Student Council President Max Van Arsdall, the LPS Student Vote has predicted the past four elections, but it looks like that wasn’t the case this year.
