The varsity girls volleyball team started the season with a lot of adversity. The base of any team and athlete is having goals for yourself and for the team. These lady Gators made goals to be the number one team in the city, as well as getting to host their district.
Every year, the volleyball teams round up and talk about goals for their upcoming season. Last season, the words trust, passion, and intensity were written on the back of their practice shirts to remind them all of their biggest goals. This year, they made individual goals for every tournament they will be attending.
Captains Mackenzie McAndrew (12), Cari McGarvie (12), and Carly Faller (12) want our student body to expect them to work hard every game and play smoothly together.
McAndrew, varsity’s starting setter, is working hard on being a leader on the court and helping her teammates. McGarvie’s goals to help the team are to always stay positive and to take the team into her own hands when they are down.
“As far as teams goals we’ve talked a lot about being the number one team in the city, as well as getting to host our district at North Star which would mean being in the top 7. Those are two of our biggest goals,” said outside hitter Carley Warner (12). Warner said she’s working hard to recover from a knee injury that held her back from practicing with the team over the summer and still affects her strength. “It makes me tougher mentally because I know that I have to work that much harder than everyone else. I have a lot of support from my teammates…and it really helps me stay motivated.”
Over the course of the season, the Gators hope to improve on going after every ball, keeping each ball in play, and playing as a team, not individuals. They also hope to improve on their defense and perfecting what is already good.
The varsity volleball team travels to Omaha Westside this Tuesday to take on the Warriors.
