Invisible Children

Can you imagine a place where death is an every day occurance? Seeing your friends, relatives, or even your own sister being taken away, or even murdered beside you. Your friends are brainwashed into soldiers when you are just a teenager or younger. All you can do to escape the ongoing war in Uganda is continue to believe in your dreams for success.
One young boy who never gave up his dreams for success is Pepito. Pepito recently visited North Star with Invisible Children to share his story. Pepito was living in one of the camps that the Uganda government forced its people into. His family had been taken away from him, and he was left alone. Then Invisible Children arrived in Uganda and started to make a difference in Pepito’s life, and many other young people. Pepito is on his way to becoming a lawyer, and shine light onto justice in Uganda. “Together we can make Uganda better,” said Pepito.
Invisible Children is a foundation that raises money for boys and girls in Uganda who may not be able to go to school without their help. The founders are “Creating a movement to increase awareness and this is one way to help Northern Uganda,” said Geoffrey (Pepito’s mentor). Students can take school for granted sometimes when we have to go every day, but we get to go to school for free. School fees in Uganda can be a couple dollars in United States currency, but a U.S. dollar can equal about $2072.41 in Shillings (Uganda currency).
As students, it seems like we can’t help these students when compared to the amount of help that Uganda needs, but donating just a few dollars can help someone just like you fulfill their dreams. Invisible Children alone donated more money to Uganda than the United States government and United Nations.  As a school we can help raise money and help Pepito bring justice to Uganda. The best ways to help are participate in the Invisible Children club, or visit www.invisiblechildren.com. The Invisible Children club is meeting on April 21, 2010. Mr. Barnacle is the facilitator. This is a great way to get into the Invisible Children program, and help raise some money with fundraisers.
