Many records have been broken this season for the Gator Track and Field Team, but not all mean as much as this one. Jamal Little, a two sport athlete who competed on varsity for the Football and Track team, would end up breaking the discus record previously held for 12 years prior. There have been many Gator greats to enter this school and bring up the community, Eddie Key III was one of them. The 2013 graduate was a great piece of the North Star Football and Track team, helping football to a 7-3 record, but his contributions to his teammates in track were huge. His throw of 157 Ft would be a record for 12 years until a windy day in Kearney on Tuesday, May 13th. Jamal Little ended up throwing 163 ft to take third at districts and punch his way to state, so he can try even harder to own up to the Gator tradition of great discus throwers.
Jamal’s progress is nothing short of spectacular, he stated,” breaking this record means a lot because he gets to have his name on the board for a long time, hopefully.” He loves the respect that he’s been getting due to the previous record holder being the Late Great Eddie Key. With the State Meet coming up next week, he will have all the momentum and confidence that it takes to bring home a state gold medal, he also stated,”I feel amazing, that record was collecting dust, someone needed to take claim to it.” While all this success is coming his way, he also has someone to help propel him to the next level. Sophomore Nathan Dush and Jamal Little have something that you may call a rivalry, with the sophomore being great at Shotput, and Jamal specializing in Discus. He said,” With Nathan being so good at discus, it gives him more motivation to go get another record in discus, while Nathan tries to get his in shot put.” All of the contributions from the coaches at practice, to Gator alumni encouraging others younger than them through their actions alone, will help get the Gators a State title at Burke in the days to come.
