On April 20th, the annual Nebraska State Journalism Championships was held in Norfolk, Nebraska. Among over thousands of applications submitted, Senior Editor in Chief, Chase Strohmyer was selected to go for his submissions in Action Photography. Every year State is hosted as a way for journalism students with a passion to get recognized for all their hard work. Top eight in each category are awarded with a medal and a spot on the podium for their exceptional application; Strohmyer received sixth place.
Strohmyer has been involved in Yearbook for only two years but has been seriously interested in photography for about three years. He began photo 1 and photo 2 his sophomore year, then the following year started taking action shots at North Star sporting events. Over his senior year his online photography account where he posts all his photos has gained lots of traction allowing him to further his creative abilities. Over the course of the year Strohmyer has been able to capture thousands of photos at numerous events, allowing him to expand his portfolio. With lots to choose from, Strohmyer put forward his three best photos.
Despite all the people at State, Strohmyer had a sort of confidence in him because he has “gained a lot of experience over the year” and has been focusing on “improving [his] editing skills”. As the writing competition ended and the photo one began Strohmyer patiently awaited to hear his placing. When sixth place was announced Chase excitedly took his place on the podium feeling the pride of being first in LNS history to place under the photography division.
Despite his recognition, Strohmyer says he is “hungry for more” and will be looking towards chasing the next achievement as his career moves along. Strohmyer plans on attending UNL in the fall to major in sports media so he can continue to improve.
