Sport is a beautiful thing. Through victories and losses, teams, athletes, and coaches push and fight their way to the top. Competition unites people regardless of background, ability, and pasts. Unfortunately, this beautiful thing isn’t available to everyone. There are barriers, whether it be financial, logistical, or physical.
![]() But, thanks to the opportunities provided by Unified, everyone can experience the magic that is track and field. Those 8 lanes and tarmac are tried and true to be a real test of character. Despite the setbacks they’re faced with, many brave folk each year brave the trials and tribulations that come along with wearing spikes and toting a baton. Students with all sorts of limitations; both physical and mental, get to compete alongside both each other and their partners, creating a very unique sense of competition found nowhere else. One of the senior partners of Unified Track, Paxton Scott, has been helping and enjoying Unified for three years. The practices consist of “a warm up, then we practice shot put, long jump and relays.” One of the things Scott is looking forward to this season is simply “having fun and performing at our best”, which won’t be too high of a task for the Gators. But, most importantly, “it’s super fun and it’s an amazing way to meet new people and do new things”, says Scott. The smiles and joy displayed on the faces of those competing are undeniably genuine; and a moment that they won’t ever let go of. Students with all sorts of limitations; both physical and mental, get to compete alongside both each other and their partners, creating a very unique sense of competition found nowhere else. Brandishing both an ESPN Honor Roll Plaque and Unified Champion School Banner, there’s not much of a doubt that Lincoln North Star is not only a successful place to be but a welcoming and opportunistic one.
