Days before the season starts, here is a look into the North Star girls basketball team. Flashing back to the past, the 2023 winter team made it to state and is attacking that goal again this year. Head coach Tommy Johnson will guide the Gators into the right direction. A group of girls were asked a couple of questions regarding their thoughts before the season started.
What do you think the record will be this season and why?
Holding a solid record of twenty wins and six losses, Ani leu (11) believes the Gators will go undefeated. One of the many strong guards North Star possesses, Leu has been playing basketball since the second grade. She’s continued her basketball career by playing in high school for two seasons. Leu said, “We’ve come a long way and put in a lot of work in this pre-season compared to previous years.” Depending on their hard work and the connection between these girls, they are bound to receive the state title.
What is going to be your role this season and how are you going to do it?
The role Joyce Johnson (10) will take on is building chemistry within the team and getting to the end destination: state. She plans on doing this by taking action and being vocal. Johnson said, “I will also hold my teammates accountable by believing them.” Placing their standards high at the start of the season, the girls have set themselves up for something great.
How will you achieve making state?
Sarah Gatwetch (12), shooter and point guard for North Star, ensures that they can make it to state. Gatwetch will stay focused and work hard everyday. She believes not only in herself, but the team as well.
These girls’ overall end goal is to not only make it to state, but to take the title. By pushing one another, they’ll strive to grow as players while creating stronger bonds. Playing two seasons with each other has set up for the start of tight bonds and many more unforgettable memories to come.
