Ms. Lindsay Masin is an English teacher here at North Star, outside of being an English teacher, she directs theater. She has been directing theater since graduating College back in 2013 but only has been directing at North Star for four years. Ms. Masin has been a part of theater since she was eight years old and knew she wanted to direct when she realized she loved seeing the whole picture and watching it come together. One of her old directors told her he’s been watching her work and told her she should be doing that!
As many people may know, the fall play got switched from The Crucible to The Miracle Worker, but why? The answer is simple, there just weren’t enough people to make a full cast. There were still about four open spots left when auditions ended and “it was hard to make something fit that doesn’t quite fit.” Masin states. But why The Miracle Worker? Some could say Mrs. Eichinger is the Miracle here. Masin and Mrs. Eichinger were communicating at lunch and Mrs. Eichinger suggested The Miracle Worker to Masin and it all just fell into place from there. Obviously because of this Mrs. Eichinger HAS to be there. Fortunately for the cast, the switch didn’t cause much of a loss in rehearsal time but unfortunately for Masin it resulted in a loss in a summer of planning. Masin believes the switch helped push the actors to work harder.
The fall play is about Helen Keller’s life and how Annie Suliven helped work with her, because of this, most of the cast has had to learn ASL (American Sign Language) but the leads, Helen Keller (Emerson Macfee) and Annie Suliven (Kaydence Kozakiewicz) have had to put in more effort. “I was very nervous at first but surprised at how much they already knew,” Masin says. To help her cast learn, Masin gave her cast videos to learn ASL but eventually brought in a teacher from the NE Center for the Education of the Blind to teach ASL just to make sure that everything was accurate. “I wanted to make sure we were being kind to their community,” she states. Masin is very proud of her students’ willingness to learn ASL and be patient with all the teachers she brought in.
As far as Masins’ favorite part of the play goes, “It changes every performance because a different character finds their moment and that becomes MY favorite moment, but the moments with the dog will probably be my favorite.” The cast and crew have put in two months of work to make this show absolutely perfect, so why not show up for your fellow Gators?
