Gators Boys Soccer Turning Their Season Around for the Better

AAs spring sports are in mid season Gators Boys soccer is trying to turn their season around for the better. Last Wednesday, April 10th, The boys had their senior night after a 4-1 win over Northeast. They got off to an early lead with Ben Dett scoring a goal in the first 15 minutes. Northeast responded quickly with a goal of their own not even 10 minutes later. But Edwin deLuna and Yahir DeLuna decided to close the game out, scoring 3 goals after their goal. This was the first win of the season for the team. Following their win they played east 2 days later on April 12th. Surprisingly they upset Lincoln East with a 2-1 win in overtime. Yahir DeLuna scored the first goal off a free kick passed in by his younger brother Edwin DeLuna. Later on in overtime Edwin DeLuna was able to sneak a goal past their back line, winning the game for North Star. We asked Edwin how it felt to score the overtime goal, he went on to say “It felt good because it was his first high school goal, It was great that it led to us getting the win.”

The Varsity team has 14 seniors this year, Most of the seniors have stayed with North Star all four years, trying out every season. Although their record has not been the best while they have been at North Star, a lot of lifelong memories have been made these past four years. Senior Yahir DeLuna said, “My favorite memory was beating Grand Island in a close game sophomore year.” Senior Jace Kimbrough said, “My favorite memory was beating east on their senior night and scoring a goal freshman year in overtime in district to move on to the next round.” When Kimbrough was asked how the team has changed over the past four years on varsity, “The team chemistry is a lot better this year with 14 seniors on the team, There seems to be more hope and confidence in the team especially after beating East.”
