The halls were buzzing with excitement on Tuesday, April 4th, 2024 when the U.S. Surgeon General, Vivek Murthy, visited North Star High School. The Surgeon General, who was already in Lincoln, decided to visit North Star to discuss important issues teenagers are facing. It was fortuitous that on the day Dr. Murthy decided to visit, it was Hope Day, a day dedicated to spreading the word about Hope Squad and providing support, resources, and hope to peers. His visit also consisted of touring the newly built aviation wing. Selected students from both programs came together to eat lunch and talk.
One student who was lucky enough to meet and talk with Dr. Murthy was senior, Mikey Pitts. When asked how it felt to be one of the students picked to meet him, Pitts responded with,“It was an honor. It was really nice to talk to someone who is high up in our government.” Pitts was further asked what the conversations with Dr. Murthy entailed, “The current state of mental health in youth and the effects social media has on youth.”
After a quick visit to the Star, the Surgeon General was on his way. His visit was very impactful and filled with positive interactions with members of our school. While his visit will remain unknown to a large number of students, it will always be a big part of our school history.
