Art: The Little-Known AP Course

By Katelyn Neumann/GG Staff Writer

North Star has a wide variety of classes to choose from, ranging anywhere from your basic math class to Chinese.

One class many people don’t know is offered is an advanced placement (AP) art class.

AP Art is taken by some of the most advanced and experienced student artists at North Star. Many of these students plan on pursuing a career in art.

AP art is different from other art classes. The students are allowed to pick the topics of their work and don’t necessarily have a set curriculum.  This allows students to focus and expand certain areas of their skills and improve upon their specialties.

“My favorite part of AP Art is that I get to roam freely and look for my own inspiration,” said Leila Al Aboudi (12).

Another thing that sets this class apart from other art classes is that students can receive  college credit.

AP Art classes are graded a little differently than most. Every quarter, students are assessed on three different aspects of art: breadth of work, quality, and concentration. Students make at least 12 pieces per quarter, with five going into  the student artist’s portfolio. Artist portfolios are a compilation of the student’s best work. It is submitted to art schools and colleges when the students are seniors.

AP Art is one of the smallest classes in North Star, with only four students taking it this semester. To be qualified for this class, students must have taken at least four art classes prior and demonstrated elite artwork in these classes.
