False Memories Lead to Misunderstanding with Mandela Effect

False Memories Lead to Misunderstanding with Mandela Effect

By Brenna Bode/GG Staff Writer

The Mandela Effect is when a lot of people have a vivid memory of an event or thing that never actually happened; basically, a false memory.

For example, it all started with Nelson Mandela. Many people believed he died in prison when, in reality, he died much later. He died on Dec. 5, 2013, which confused a lot of people.

Another popular “false” memory involves the Berenstain Bears. Almost everyone you ask will vividly remember the “Berenstein Bears” books, but that never existed. Every single book, video, and piece of merchandise you can find will be spelled “Berenstain Bears.”

One of the most famous lines from the Disney princess movie “Snow White” you will probably remember is “Mirror mirror on the wall…,” or is it? Looking back at the movie clips now, the quote is “Magic mirror on the wall, who is the fairest of them all.” The weirdest part is that only the English version of “Snow White” says “Magic mirror.”

Febreeze or Febreze? I would think it would only make sense for the air freshener to be spelled Febreeze, like a nice breeze of fresh air, but no. It’s always been Febreze.

Do you remember the little cartoon monkey Curious George having a tail? The majority of people do, but it turns out he never actually did.

Jiffy peanut butter never existed. It has always been just Jif.

“The Flintstones’ was a really popular cartoon that many people grew up watching. Although many seem to remember it being “Flinstones,” because  that’s how everyone pronounced it.

People have many different theories on why false memories occur. It could include time traveling, psychology, switching between alternate universes, and simply just a big misunderstanding.
