Blood Moon Rare Sight

By Derek Mikus/Gator Galaxy Staff

On the night of Sunday, Sept. 27, the earth gave us something we haven’t seen since 1982, a super blood moon. North Star science teacher Ms. Wilson said, “It was definitely a sight to see when I walked outside that night.”

Unless you are an astronomist, there is a good chance you have never heard of the term “Blood Moon,” and you’re not alone. A lot of people didn’t even know such a thing existed.

The reason it’s called a blood moon is for the rusty red-orange color it turns once it is completely in the Earth’s shadow. The moon on Sunday night was a supermoon, which made it even more rare. It’s where the moon is on its orbit closest to earth, giving it the impression that the moon is much larger than normal. The combination of the super moon and lunar eclipse gave us the amazing sight.

Some people were not as excited to see the Blood Moon, because of the biblical prophecies that suggested it was the beginning of an apocalypse. The Blood Moon on Sept. 27 was the fourth one in the past two years which is known as a tetrad series. Some religious leaders believ the tetrad series is signaling something is getting ready to happen, that will change the world forever. Some also believe that it is signaling the second coming of Jesus Christ.

For any of those concerned that the world is coming to an end, NASA should prove otherwise. “NASA knows of no asteroid or comet currently on a collision course with Earth, so the probability of a major collision is quite small,” according to the NASA website.

For those who missed the rare phenomenon, you will have to wait until the next one, which isn’t until 2033.
