Does This Make Me Look Fat?

Our generation has become obsessed with the idea of being “perfect” and what “perfect” is suppose to look like.

Many people will go to extreme measures to make “perfect” possible for themselves, even if there are consequences to their body and even health.

A new and popular trend young women have started using involve waist trainers. Waist training is a gradual process of waist reduction using a tightened corset. It can even move around your organs in order to make your waist the “perfect size.”

“I think waist trainers are very dangerous and girls who use them are insecure, because of what society has taught them what you’re suppose to look like,” said Brooke Homeyer (11).

Everyone sees beautiful girls in magazines and on social media with “perfect” bodies and then ask themselves, “Why don’t I look like that?” What they don’t realize is the people in these pictures are frequently edited with computer programs like Photoshop to eliminate imperfections.

Even models have insecurities, just like everyone else, and readers fail to remember that every now and again.

For many girls, being “model thin” is what they strive for and researchers even found that television and other media are questioning the self-esteem of girls as young as 5 years old.

Statistics show that 80 percent of 10 year old girls are afraid to be fat. By middle school, 40 to 70 percent of girls are dissatisfied with two or more parts of their body and that body satisfaction usually hits rock bottom between ages of 12 and 15.

“I think it’s important to be comfortable in your own skin and not to judge yourself and your flaws based off of the media,” said Morgan Edwards (11).

Another increasing trend in teenage girls has been distributing nudity through different forms of media and messaging. This is usually associated with how people view themselves and having a lack of self confidence. They want another person to make them feel good by sending out these photos to see a positive reaction. But what they think they are sending to one person could end up being seen by many. Sending nude photos of yourself to others can be considered distribution of child pornography and can be punishable by jail time. Those convicted would also have to register as sex offenders for the rest of their lives.

Recently, a school in Colorado found that nearly half the student population had been sending nude photos and other inappropriate photos to each other through secret apps on their phones. What may look like a simple application might actually be hiding sexting photos and other messages.

It’s important to have good thoughts about yourself and to not be afraid to be you. Surrounding yourself with good people can also help increase your self-esteem and you will be happier with yourself.
