By Jared Williams/Gator Galaxy Staff

On Saturday, Oct. 24, Oklahoma State University had their annual Homecoming parade. During the parade, 25-year-old Adacia Chambers drove her car into a police motorcycle and into the parade killing four people, including 2-year old Nash Lucas.

If convicted, Chambers will spend four life sentences behind bars. On Wednesday, Nov. 4, Chambers was charged with four counts of second-degree murder and driving under the influence and 46 counts of assault and battery with means likely to produce death for those injured, but not killed. She is currently being held on $1 million bail and initial psychological evaluations show Chambers was suffering from severe mental illness two days after her arrest. Police are currently waiting on results from the blood tests to confirm if she was affected by drugs or alcohol.

She had said she was suicidal, and has admitted to having several attempts of suicide. Chambers also said she had previously been helped for mental-health related issues, and had been hospitalized twice in the last two years.

Mental illness is very common in teenagers and young adults. Doctors are starting to diagnose more mental illnesses in more people. There is lots of places in Lincoln where you can get help if you are having mental health related issues, such as, Bryan Counseling Center Mental Health Clinic, Nebraska Mental Health Center, and Child Guidance Center. You can find their website and phone number online and in the phone book.

“Despite the mental-health related issues, I think she still deserves to go to jail. She intentionally drove her car into a crowd of people,” said Ethan Wobken (12).

According to the National Institute of Mental Health, 3.73 percent of young adults will experience major depression, while 20 percent of all teens will experience it. Depression can be helped with antidepressant’s prescribed by your doctor, along with psychological treatments.
