Jumping for Success

Jumping for Success

Track season is underway, but this season is more than just competition for some Gators. While some athletes compete for the first time, like  freshman Brooke Horner, others prepare for the final meets of their high school careers, like senior Jeralyn Poe.

On March 19, at the Kearney High Invitational North Star High Jump history was made. Horner, a three-sport athlete, beat the school high jump record of 5-2 by two inches. “It felt really good to start off on such a good note,” said Horner. “The next step for me is to  break the record again.” Horner,  along with her coaches, were more than pleased with the results of many rigorous practices leading up to the meet helping her to achieve such a high honor. This accomplishment creates not only a positive environment for all athletes, but  some healthy competition among all the jumpers. Although such early success is tough on some teammates, it allows for healthy competition. The team heads into its final meets of the season beginning Thursday April 30th at Southeast high school.

Another record in the book is that of Poe , a three time track and cross-country state champion. Poe has worked continually the entire year to turn her three-peat into a four-peat, something that hasn’t been achieved in school history. “My life revolves around running,” said Poe. “It’s what I love to do.” Prior to the season Poe committed to run for  Michigan State University.
