Soccer in the Off Season

By Alex Stogdill/Gator Galaxy Staff

When a team or individual is successful during their sport season, it is often wondered how they were able to become so good. The off season training athletes participate in is crucial to their success during the season of the sport they play in. No matter what sport is being played, off season training is a common necessity for success. The North Star soccer program for boys and girls is no exception.

The players who expect to tryout for the boys or girls teams have already begun their off season training regimens. They strive to improve their physical capabilities as well as establishing a good mindset for the upcoming season. The boys have started their regimen with two days of conditioning and one day of lifting a week. They will gradually increase that to three days of conditioning and one day of lifting per week. Their emphasis is to build up lower body strength along with being in shape so they are prepared for the season. Many of the players play indoor soccer during the off season to keep up on their skills. José Cano (11) who was on the varsity team last year is looking for those benefits from his off season training, “I want to be in better shape this year and be physically as well as mentally prepared for our games.” Having goals for oneself in the off season is good to have because you have the time to work towards them, and hopefully see the turnout during the season. One of Cano’s goals which is similar, but still very important is to improve his game, “I want to increase my strength and stamina so I can play at a high level, and I would like to improve on my ball skills as well.” All of the training going on within the boys soccer program will hopefully produce the results that each player on the team expects to see.

The girls side of the program has been working just as hard in their training regimen, too. The girls train five days during the school week to prepare for their season. Three days out of the week are spent conditioning, while the two remaining days are spent lifting. Much of their workouts are focused on improving the same areas of physical abilities as is the boy’s regimen. The girls also have open gym where they can play pickup games of soccer in the gym once or twice a week. Many of them play indoor soccer along with the boys, and play not only in Lincoln, but Gretna as well. McKenzie Currey (11) was on last year’s varsity team and she is a fan of the off season training that she does, “I like indoor soccer the most because it’s different and faster than outdoor soccer.” Now the training that goes on isn’t always just physical, but mental too. Currey has developed her own mindset on being successful this season, “My mindset for this upcoming season is to get faster and stronger so that I can help my team have a better chance at going to state this year.” There are high expectations for this season, and the Lady Gators hope to fulfill them.

As you can see, there is a lot of effort being put into the training for the upcoming soccer season. Both the boys and the girls intend on being very successful this year, and trust that their training will help them do so. The soccer season keeps creeping up until it’s finally upon us, and the Gators will be ready to roll. Be sure to come out and support!
